Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers

This paper describes an exploratory research project undertaken with 293 excombatants who participated as child soldiers in the El Salvador civil war either as members of the Frente Farabundo Martí de Liberación Nacional (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front [FMLN]) or as soldiers in the Salvadorian armed forces (la Fuerza Armada de El Salvador [FAES]). The aim of the research was to assess the impact upon them of their past military experiences, and to examine their current living conditions. Although nearly ten years have passed since the peace accords were signed, the ex-combatants continued to exhibit signs of emotional disturbance. Current underprivileged living conditions and social marginalization were decisive factors in their psychosocial presentation. These factors inhibited the ex-combatants’ re-entry into civilian life and placed at risk their familial, community and social reintegration.
